Three Hurricanes Earn All-ACC Academic Honors
April 14, 2010
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John D. Swofford has announced that three student-athletes from the University of Miami women’s track and field were named to the All-ACC Academic Indoor Track and Field Team.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during their academic career.
This is the second year for the All-ACC Academic Indoor Track and Field Team. In previous years, the ACC combined the indoor and outdoor seasons in forming the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Both Kristy Whyte and Megan Novinger are earning their second nod to the academic team, while Miranda Wilson is making her first appearance on the squad.
Whyte, a Pembroke Pines, Fla. native, ran the first leg of the 4×400 relay team that crossed the finish line in a NCAA provisional time of 3:36.18 at the Tyson Invitational. She also competed in the 60m dash where she ran a season-best time of 7.59 seconds at the ACC Championships. The Exercise Physiology major carries a 3.304 GPA and is on course to graduate in May.
In her junior season, Novinger set a new personal-best in the high jump as she leapt 1.75m (5-08.75) at Penn State’s National Open. That mark also moved her into third place in the Miami record books, trailing only Viktoria Andonova and Robin Beecham. The Miami native is a dual major in Criminology and Italian and holds a 3.332 GPA.
Wilson, a Psyschology major with a 3.485 GPA is the Hurricanes top thrower and she recorded personal best marks in the shot put and weight throw, reaching 15.11m (49-07.00) and 17.60m (57-09.00) respectively. The junior also won the weight throw at the University of Illinois’ Carle/Health Alliance Classic with a toss of 17.44m (57-02.75).
