Miami Claims Three Event Titles in Day One of Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES –  The University of Miami track and field team had winning performances from Miranda Wilson, Megan Novinger and Emma Steppe in the opening day of the Hurricane Invitational, Friday at Cobb Stadium.

 

Miranda Wilson began her 2010 outdoor campaign with a great performance in the hammer throw. With a mark of 52.40m (171-11.00), the junior reached the fourth-best throw in school history.  The Vallejo, Calif native is slated to participate in both the shot put and the discus on Saturday.

 

Junior Megan Novinger was the top collegiate performer in the high jump with a mark of 1.70m (5-07.00), matching her career-high. Former Hurricane All-American Viktoria Andonova had the top overall mark , reaching a height of 1.80m (5-10.75).

 

Lauren Phipps had a personal-best performance as she climbed to No. 3 in the school record books with a vault of 3.15m (10-04.00).  That mark puts her in fourth place all-time in the pole vault in only her second collegiate event.

 

The women’s 5,000m run saw two Hurricanes sweep the top-two spots. Emma Steppe took the top spot with a time of 18:28.44. Anna Bona finished right behind at 18:29.38. Caitlin Knapp also finished with a sub 19-minute time of 18:49.79.

 

Sophomore Rachel Dupree sits in third place in the heptathlon after four events. The Atlanta native won the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.41 seconds. She also placed second in the high jump, reaching a mark of 1.58m (5-02.25).  Dupree currently has 2,762 points and will resume action with the long jump, Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.

 

The men’s decathlon will continue at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning with both field and running events set to start at 1 p.m.

 

Sixteen universities from around the country will all be represented Saturday, including Miami’s ACC foe Virginia Tech, Texas of the Big 12, Connecticut of the BIG EAST and Wisconsin of the Big 10. 

 

Just six days ago at the NCAA Indoor National Championships – Ti’erra Brown earned her third All-America honor, placing third in the 60m hurdles. In the preliminary heat, the junior set a new school record by running an 8.00. Brown is scheduled to make her outdoor debut in the 100m hurdles, Saturday at 2 p.m.

 

Also garnering indoor All-America honors last weekend was sophomore jumper, Brittni Finch. With a leap of 6.06m (19-10.50), Finch became the 11th Miami athlete to earn indoor All-American honors in the long jump. Joining her in the long jump will be the Christina Madry.

 

Ashley Dukes, who missed most of the last two seasons, had a huge indoor campaign for herself this year. She won the ACC Championship in the 60m dash with a time of 7.34 seconds and competed in the NCAA National Championships. The Hollywood, Fla. native is scheduled to run a leg of the 4×100 relay.

 

Both Takecia and Tameka Jameson will be competing in the 200m dash – scheduled for Saturday at 4:20 p.m.  Tameka is also set to take on the field in the 400m dash.

 

The 2008 ACC Outdoor Track Performer of the Year, Kristy Whyte, will join the Jameson twins in the 200m dash while also competing in the 100m dash earlier Saturday afternoon.

 

The men will be led by sophomore Devon Hill, who won the ACC Championship in the 60m hurdles in February. He will compete in the 110m hurdles as well as make an appearance for a leg of the 4×400 relay.

 

Brian Laskowski, who ran an indoor team-best time of 1:52.33 in the 800m, will compete in the event on Saturday as well as run a leg in the 4×400 relay.

 

Admission into Cobb Stadium will be $3 for children and $5 for adults and can be purchased at the Cobb Stadium gate upon entrance into the facilty.
