Hurricanes Ready For ACC Indoor Championships
Feb. 24, 2010
CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami track and field team is set for the ACC Indoor Championships at the Rector Field House on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., Feb. 25-27.
Junior Ti’erra Brown heads into her third ACC Indoor Championships with two national rankings. She currently is No. 5 in the 60m hurdles (8.16 seconds) and 14th in the 400m dash with the ACC-best time of 53.48 seconds. She will compete in both events this weekend with qualifying heats beginning Friday afternoon.
Also garnering national attention is Ashley Dukes. The sprinter ran a conference-best time of 7.33 at the Penn State National Invitational in January and ranks 10th in the NCAA this season. Dukes will be joined by Tara Thomas and senior Kristy Whyte. The qualifying heat for the 60m dash is set for Friday at 4:05 p.m.
Miami’s jumping duo of Deandra Doyley and Brittni Finch will both be competing in the long and triple jumps. Doyley is ranks third in the conference with a leap of 6.30m (20-08.00) in the long jump – 12th nationally. Finch isn’t far behind, as her mark of 6.12m (20-01.00) is the sixth-best mark in the ACC. Doyley, who has also impressed in the 60m hurdles this season, will join Brown and Takecia Jameson in that event.
Miranda Wilson will compete in both the weight throw and the shot put, events where she ranks fifth and sixth in the ACC respectively.
After reaching a career-best mark of 1.75m (5-08.75) at the Penn State Invite, junior Megan Novinger will look for an All-ACC result in the high jump on Saturday.
The strength of the men’s team lies in the 60m hurdles, where Devon Hill and Cory Nelms rank first and second in the conference and seventh and 14th nationally. Nelms is the defending ACC champion and the Hurricanes are hopeful to see both men on the podium.
The `Canes look to receive some scoring punch from the football team as Travis Benjamin and Lamar Miller will run in the 60m dash, with Brandon Harris and Micanor Regis compete in the 400m dash and shot put respectively.
The 4×400 relay for both the men and women are scheduled to compete. The women are the second-ranked team in the ACC and the 11th-best in the nation and are aiming for a championship showing.
Friday’s events start at 1 p.m. with the men’s long jump.
Live results as well as live streaming video of select events on Saturday and Sunday will be available at theacc.com/championships.
