Miami to Face No. 9 North Carolina

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on the No. 9/10 North Caarolina Tar Heels, Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Dean E. Smith Center.

Miami suffered its second straight heartbreaking loss at the hands of a ranked team. Just three days after falling in overtime to the No. 21 Virginia Cavaliers, Miami lost by one to the 11th-ranked Florida State Seminoles. In that game, senior captain LaToya Cunningham hit four three pointers on her way to a career-high 20 points. Sophomore Epiphany Woodson also scored in double-figures with 13 points as well as dishing out six assists.
On her way to grabbing her third ACC Freshman of the Week award, Shenise Johnson scored eight points and brought down 10 rebounds to go with her five assists.
Against North Carolina, the Hurricanes will seek their first win over a ranked opponent in three seasons and aim to break the three-way tie in conference play among Virginia Tech and Clemson
A Look at the Tar Heels
North Carolina enters Thursday night’s game with an 24-4 overall record and a 9-3 Atlantic Coast Conference record. It has won three-straight, over Georgia Tech, Boston College and NC State.
The Tar Heels are led by Rashanda McCants who is averaging 14.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Italee Lucas and Jessica Breland score 13.4 and 13.3 points per game respectively.
North Carolina is averaging 83.5 points and 45.0 rebounds per game as a team. It is shooting 45.7 percent (850-1861) from the floor, 34.2 percent (147-430) from beyond the arc and 71.8 (490-682) from the free throw line. The Tar Heels also register 12.5 steals and 6.8 blocked shots per outing, while holding their opponents to 64.0 points per game and a shooting percentage of 35.4 (662-1872).

The Hurricanes and Tar Heels have met 10 times since 1981 with North Carolina holding an 8-2 all-time series advantage. UNC has won the last five meetings including a 79-61 result at the BankUnited Center last season. In that game, LaToya Cunningham hit two three pointers on her way to 11 points.
