Hurricanes Face Nebraska in Battle of Unbeatens

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team will host the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers at the BankUnited Center on Saturday, December 5. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.

At 7-0, Miami is off to its best start since the 2003-04 season, when it opened 12-0. The Hurricanes will face Nebraska one week after winning their own Wyndham Miami Thanksgiving Tournament – defeating Long Beach State and UMass. Shenise Johnson was named the tournament MVP and Diane Barnes was named to the all-tournament team for their performances.
Sophomore Riquna Williams leads the ACC with 24.4 points per game and is ranked sixth nationally. She also leads the conference with 27 three-pointers. Barnes who has an ACC-best four double-doubles on the season also leads the conference with 11.4 rebounds per game.
For the first time since December of 2006, the Hurricanes have received votes in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls. Nebraska also has received votes in both polls.
A Look at the Cornhuskers
Nebraska has started the season with the same 7-0 record as the Hurricanes and most recently defeated South Dakota 77-38 on Thursday night.
The Cornhuskers are led by Kelsey Griffin who is averaging 16.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Cory Montgomery is averaging 12.9 points per game while Yvonne Turner and Dominique Kelley average 12.3 and 10.6 respectively.
Nebraska is averaging 82.4 points and 44.9 rebounds per game as a team. It is shooting 46.7 percent (202-433) from the floor, 35.3 percent (55-156) from beyond the arc and 66.7 (118-177) from the free throw line. The Cornhuskers also register 8.6 steals and 4.3 blocked shots per outing, while holding their opponents to 52.0 points per game and a shooting percentage of 34.7 (136-392).
The Series
These two programs have met only once previously – in 1982. Nebraska won that contest 76-74 in Coral Gables.
