Miami Seeks 5-0 Start Against Houston on Youth Day

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team will host the University of Houston Cougars on Youth Day at the BankUnited Center on Tuesday, November 24. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.

For the first time since the 2003-04 season Miami has a 4-0 record and will look to improve to 5-0 against Houston on UM’s annual Youth Day. The Hurricanes have put up impressive offensive numbers to start the season and in the win against UAB on Saturday, Shenise Johnson led all scorers with 20 points. Riquna Williams scored 18 points, with 15 coming in the second half and for the second straight game, Diane Barnes scored 12 points and pulled down 14 rebounds – her third double-double of the season.
So far this season, Williams is leading the ‘Canes in scoring, averaging 27.8 points a game. The Pahokee, Fla. native is also a perfect 18-of-18 from the free-throw line and leads the ACC with 19 made three-pointers. Barnes has grabbed 11.8 boards a game and as a team Miami has dominated the glass pulling down 14.8 more rebounds per game than its opponents.
A Look at the Cougars
Houston is coming of its first loss of the season to the No.7/15 LSU Tigers on Saturday. Before that, UH had defeated Gardner-Webb, UT-Arlington and Oregon State.
The Cougars are led by Courtney Taylor who is averaging 17.3 points and 13.5 rebounds per game. Brittney Scott is averaging 15.8 points per game while Roxana Button is averaging 9.0.
Houston is averaging 66.8 points and 42.5 rebounds per game as a team. It is shooting 40.3 percent (96-238) from the floor, 35.6 percent (21-59) from beyond the arc and 58.7 (54-92) from the free throw line. The Cougars also register 6.3 steals and 3.3 blocked shots per outing, while holding their opponents to 60.5 points per game and a shooting percentage of 35.6 (93-261).
The Series
Houston holds a 7-1 all-time series lead and has won the last seven meetings – including meetings each of the last three seasons. Last year in Houston, Johnson scored 21 points her first collegiate road game, but UH’s Taylor scored 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the Cougars 70-64 win.
