CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team travels to Alabama to take on the UAB Blazers at the Bartow Arena on Saturday, November 21.  Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. EST.

Miami has won the first three games of the season in impressive fashion over UC Riverside, CSU Bakersfield and Bethune-Cookman. Sophomore Riquna Williams is averaging 31 points per game to start the season and even hit a school-record eight three-pointers at CSU Bakersfield this past Sunday. The Pahokee, Fla. native scored 30 or more points in back-to-back games to open the season for the ‘Canes and was the first UM player since Tamara James (2005-06 season) to accomplish the feat.

               

The Hurricanes are 3-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season and are averaging an impressive 95.0 points per game.  Diane Barnes has recorded two double-doubles in the season’s first three games, scoring 12 points with 11 rebounds at UC Riverside and scoring 12 again with a career-high 14 boards vs. Bethune-Cookman.

 

A Look at the Blazers

UAB is coming of an 88-55 loss to the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes on Tuesday.

               

The Blazers are led by Tamika Dukes who is averaging 15.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Jala Harris is averaging 14.5 points per game while Jalisa Isaac is averaging 10.5.

               

UAB is averaging 65.5 points and 41.5 rebounds per game as a team. It is shooting 38.0 percent (49-129) from the floor, 25.6 percent (10-39) from beyond the arc and 60.5 (23-38) from the free throw line. The Blazers also register 6.5 steals and 2.5 blocked shots per outing, while holding their opponents to 75.0 points per game and a shooting percentage of 42.7 (47-110).

 

The Series

Saturday will be the third all-time meeting between the two teams. However, it will be the first meeting since 1980. UAB holds a 2-0 advantage over the Hurricanes, winning 79-63 on Nov. 21, 1980 – exactly 29 years ago.
