Miami's Riquna Williams Named ACC Player of the Week

Nov. 16, 2009

CORAL GABLES – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced that Hurricane sophomore Riquna Williams has been voted the ACC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after the season’s first weekend of play.

The ACC weekly accolade is voted on by the league’s “Blue Ribbon Panel,” which consists of national and local media members, as well as school representatives. The panel will vote for the ACC preseason poll, weekly honors and postseason all-conference teams for the 2009-10 season.

Miami opened its season with two road contests on the West Coast. In the season-opener against UC Riverside, Williams scored a career-high 34 points in an 86-63 victory – the most points scored by a Hurricane since Renee Taylor scored a school record 42 at Houston on Dec. 19, 2006.

The Pahokee, Fla. native then set a school record of her own against Cal State Bakersfield. Williams hit a record eight three-pointers on her way to 30 points – becoming the first `Cane to score 30 points in back-to-back games since Tamara James in 2006.

A season ago, Shenise Johnson was voted the ACC Rookie of the Week on three occasions, but Williams becomes the first Miami player to be named the ACC Player of the Week since Taylor on Nov. 20, 2006.

The Hurricanes face in-state rival Bethune-Cookman in their home-opener on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. at the BankUnited Center.
