Hurricanes to Open Season with First Official Practice

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team begins its 2009-10 season on Nov. 13, but will officially start practice Friday, Oct. 16 at the BankUnited Center.

In addition, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will hold their second annual Hurricanes Hoopfest at the BankUnited Center from 7-9 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 21. During the event, fans will be able to watch the men scrimmage and the women practice for 30 minutes apiece, interact with the student-athletes during an autograph session and pick their seats for the upcoming season.

Miami and head coach Katie Meier have their sights set on the postseason after bringing in yet another skilled recruiting class. Meier and her staff brought in McDonald’s All-American, Morgan Stroman – who joins sophomore Shenise Johnson as the first `Cane teammates to earn the highest high school honor.

Johnson will lead the Hurricanes after a tremendous freshman season, where she was named ACC All-Freshman, ACC Honorable Mention and was voted ACC Rookie of the Week on three occasions. Other Key returners will be seniors Charmaine Clark and Diane Banes, along with sophomore Riquna Williams.

This season’s recruiting class has an international flavor, as Hannah Shaw, Stefanie Yderstrom and Lee Anna Osei are from England, Sweden and Canada respectively. In addition, Stroman and Shanel Williams will look to make immediate impacts in their rookie campaigns.

The Hurricanes will host an exhibition games at home versus Barry, scheduled for Sat., Nov. 7, before opening the regular season on the road on Friday, Nov. 13, at UC Riverside.
