Hurricanes to Host NC State In ACC Contest

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team welcome the NC State Wolfpack to the BankUnited Center, Thursday, Jan. 22, with tip off set for 7 p.m.

The results for Miami have not been what it had expected to open ACC play. The Hurricanes are 0-4 so far in the conference this season, but have been ahead or trailed by only two points in each of their ACC contests at the half.

In ACC play, freshman Riquna Williams leads the team with 13.5 points per game. For the season, Miami’s other heralded freshman, Shenise Johnson leads the team in scoring (12.3) rebounds (7.0), assists (75), blocks (20) and steals (59).

In their last contest against Boston College, the Hurricanes made a 12-0 run late in the first half to pull within a point of the Eagles, but were unable to ever take the lead. BC made seven three-pointers to only one for Miami.

The Hurricanes will look for their first conference win against NC State which has also yet to win an ACC contest.

A Look at NC State
NC State enters Thursday night’s game with an 8-10 record. Two of its last three losses have come in overtime to two of the ACC’s best, 75-66 at No. 2/2 North Carolina and against No. 4/10 Duke, 61-58.

The Wolfpack are led by Shayla Fields who is averaging 18.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Sharnise Beal and Nikitta Gartell score 11.2 and 11.1 points per game respectively.

NC State is averaging 61.6 points and 41.3 rebounds per game as a team. It is shooting 38.5 percent (422-1096) from the floor, 27.2 percent (70-257) from beyond the arc and 69.5 (194-279) from the free throw line. The Wolfpack also register 8.9 steals and 4.6 blocked shots per outing, while holding their opponents to 57.9 points per game and a shooting percentage of 36.0 (389-1080).

The Series
The Hurricanes have yet to defeat the NC State Wolfpack in their history, with an 0-8 all-time record. In the last meeting between the two teams are NC State came away with a 51-45 win in Raleigh, N.C. Damisha Moore and Lamese James each scored seven points in the defeat on Feb. 14, 2008.
