Pair of Hurricanes Taken On First Day of 2008 NFL Draft

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former University of Miami football players Kenny Phillips and Calais Campbell were both selected on Day One of the 2008 NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Saturday. Phillips extended Miami’s record streak of 14 consecutive years in which a Hurricanes player was chosen in the first round when he was selected by the New York Giants with the 31st overall pick before Campbell was chosen later in the day by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round with the 50th overall selection.
As a junior this past season at UM, Phillips ranked second on the team with a career-high 95 tackles (69 solo) while adding two interceptions, three forced fumbles and 6.5 tackles for loss.

Campbell – also a junior – had a team-high 12.5 tackles for loss in 2007 to go along 50 tackles, six sacks, two forces fumbles and two fumble recoveries for the Hurricanes.
Phillips joins former UM tight end Jeremy Shockey on the Giants’ roster while Campbell joins a pair of former Hurricanes – running back Edgerrin James and cornerback Antrel Rolle – in Arizona.
Last year, UM had three players taken on the first day of the NFL draft. Safety Brandon Meriweather and linebacker Jon Beason were chosen back-to-back by New England (No. 24) and Carolina (No. 25) before Greg Olsen went to Chicago at No. 31.
The second day of the NFL Draft will feature rounds three through seven with coverage beginning at 11 a.m. on ESPN.
