Nov. 16, 2008

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – –

The University of Miami football team is ranked No. 23 in the Associated Press Poll released Sunday. The Hurricanes crack the AP poll for the first time this season and the first time since Sept. 10, 2006.

Miami (7-3, 4-2 ACC) received 139 votes and will take the field as a ranked team at Georgia Tech Thursday night for the first time since Sept. 16, 2006 when UM played at Louisville.

The Hurricanes are in sole possession of first-place in the Coastal Division, with a one-game lead on Georgia Tech. Miami is riding a five-game winning streak after defeating Virginia Tech, 16-14, last Thursday night. It’s the longest winning streak for the Hurricanes since 2005 when UM won eight in a row on its way to a Peach Bowl appearance.

Miami received 74 votes in the USA Today Coaches’ Top 25 poll Sunday. The Hurricanes are 23rd in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) poll also released Sunday.

The Hurricanes and Yellow Jackets are slated for a 7:30 p.m. start in Atlanta on Thursday night. The game will be televised live on ESPN.
