No. 12 Hurricanes Hit Eight Regional Marks in Atlanta

ATLANTA – The 12th-ranked University of Miami women’s track and field team completed their last regular season meet of the year, Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational at George C. Griffin Field, finishing the day with eight NCAA Regional Qualifying marks.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
After nearly a month break, four-time All-Americans Krista Simkins returned to the track and picked up her third regional time of the season in the 400-meters with a 53.86. Freshman Tameka Jameson also ran her third regional time of the season in 54.51 seconds.
In her last opportunity to pick up a regional time in the 800-meters before the NCAA East Region Championships in two weeks, junior All-American Ena Leufroy did just that in running her best time of the year with a 2:09.23.
The 4×100 relay team notched its eighth regional time of the season with a 45.59. Charlene Fuller, Kristy Whyte, Tara Thomas and Deandra Doyley ran the event on Saturday.
Thomas qualified for the finals in the 100-meters yesterday with a preliminary time of 12.00, today she recorded an 11.93 for a seventh place finish.
Whyte was the fourth collegiate to cross the line in the 200-meters with a time of 23.97 second, one one-hundredth away from her fifth regional mark in the event on the season.
Junior Viktoria Andonova tied for first in the high jump as she leapt 1.75m. It is the seventh time this season she has reached that regional mark.
Khadija Talley won the discus for the fourth time this season with a throw of 55.23m, her third best mark of the season and the fifth time she has reached a regional mark. Freshman Miranda Wilson hit a mark of 39.58m.
Talley also placed second in the shot put with her third best distance of the season at 15.20m, her fifth regional mark in the event.
After competing in the long jump on Friday night, Doyley participated in Saturday’s triple jump, where she recorded a mark of 11.82m.
Freshman Takecia Jameson ran to an 11th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.41, narrowly missing out on her eighth regional time in the event.
In the final event of the meet the 4×400 relay team of Tameka and Takecia Jameson, Simkins and Leufroy ran to victory with a 3:37.91, Miami’s sixth regional mark on the season.
The Hurricanes will send 14 student-athletes in 15 events, including both the 4×100 and the 4×400 relays, to the NCAA Regional Championship in <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Tallahassee, Fla., May 30-31.
