No. 12 Women's Track and Field Off To Atlanta

CORAL GABLES The 12th-ranked <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Miami women’s track and field team will return to the site of the 2008 ACC Outdoor Championships for the Georgia Tech Invitational at George C. Griffin Track.  The event, which is expected to bring 1,200 athletes to Atlanta will run Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

Nene Kamate and Tara Thomas will both attempt to reach regional times in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.  ACC Champion Kristy Whyte and Charlene Fuller will also run in the 200-meters.  Each of the four girls will also be a part of the 100-meter relay, with Krista Simkins Deandra Doyley and Ti’erra Brown set as alternates.

 

Simkins, will return to competition for the first time since the ACC Championships on the same track as she will be competing on this weekend.  She is currently the eighth-ranked collegiate athlete in the 400-meter dash and she will look to move up the rankings with an improved time on Saturday.  The four-time All-American will also be running in the 4×400-meter relay along with Ena Leufroy and Takecia and Tameka Jameson.  Whyte has been listed as an alternate.

 

Leufroy will also run in the 800-meters.  She will look to shave six tenths of a second off her season-best time to qualify for the regionals.

 

Takecia Jameson (No. 9) and Brown (No.4) both have qualified for the NCAA East Regional but will try to improve their rankings this weekend in the 400-meter hurdles.

 

Deandra Doyley will be looking for a better ranking in both the long and triple jumps, while fellow jumper Viktoria Andonova will try to improve on her season-best 1.75m in the high jump. 

 

Kaitlin Nazario has reached the 43.45m regional mark once this season and she will look to even challenge her own school record in the javelin at 43.64m.

 

The second-ranked discus thrower in the nation will take part in two field events in Atlanta.  Khadija Talley will compete in both the discus and the shot put.  Freshman Miranda Wilson will also compete in the discus as well as the hammer throw.

 

The 100-meter preliminary heats will open the action for the women on Friday at 6:55 p.m. while Deandra Doyley will get things started on Saturday with the triple jump.
