Relay Teams Advance to Championships at Penn Relays

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>PHILADELPHIA– The University of Miami was represented on the first day of the Penn Relays by two relay team and sophomore Deandra Doyley at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Both the 4×100 and the 4×400 relay teams qualified for the Championship heats.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Sophomore Deandra Doyley was the lone individual competitor for the Hurricanes, finishing seventh in the College Women’s Long Jump Championship. Her distance of 5.92m fell short of her season-best mark of 6.09m, but the Lauderlakes, Fla. native will have an opportunity to reach her career-high of 12.30m in the triple jump tomorrow at 10 a.m.
Out of 85 different schools, Miami’s 4×100 relay team of ACC Outdoor Performer of the Year Kristy Whyte, Tara Thomas, Charlene Fuller and Nene Kamate ran the ninth fastest time of the preliminary heats, advancing to the championship heat tomorrow at 12:50 p.m. Their time of 45.06 was good for an NCAA Regional Qualifying time. All five of the 4×100 relays Miami has competed in this season have resulted in regional times.
The sophomore Whyte and three freshmen, Ti’erra Brown, Takecia and Tameka Jameson ran the Hurricanes top-time of the season in the 4×400 relay, a scorching 3:34.21. With the fifth fastest time of the preliminary rounds, Miami will run in the championship, Saturday at 5:40 p.m.
The first event that Miami will compete in tomorrow, begins at 10 a.m. with Doyley in the triple jump. Wrapping up the day’s events will be sprint medley relay at 6:10 p.m.
