Seventh-Ranked Hurricanes Dominate UCF, 6-1

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”u1″?><?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. – In the first of two home matches this weekend, the seventh-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team picked up a dominating 6-1 win over UCF Saturday afternoon at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter. Despite losing the doubles point to the Knights to open play, UM was able to sweep all six singles matches in straight sets to pick up its sixth win of the season and third against an in-state opponent.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The Hurricanes (6-1) struggled early on in the match, dropping two-of-three doubles matches to fall behind 1-0. After the break, the momentum moved over to UM’s side when singles play commenced.
tied the match up at 1-1 with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win in the sixth position. No. 29 would put Miami up by one with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win over Elvira Serrot in the top position and the `Canes wouldn’t look back from there, sweeping the rest of the singles play.
“We were a little rusty today early on but we were able to turn things around as the match progressed,” head coach said.
In her first match at the No. 2 spot for UM, extended her winning streak this spring to 10 straight with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jenny Frisell.
“Michaela earned the opportunity to play at No. 2 with they way she has been playing the last few weeks,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “It was a good move to move her up a spot today.”
got past Kyla McNicol, 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 3 position, beat Kenza Belbacha at No. 4, 6-2, 6-1 and took out Anna Yakimchenkova, 6-2, 6-3 in the fifth spot.
In doubles play, the Knights picked up an 8-6 win in the No. 3 spot and after Vallverdu and Farah tied it up with an 8-5 win at No. 1, UCF clinched the point with an 8-5 win in the No. 2 position.
With the win, Miami’s home record moves to 4-0 on the season with convincing wins over FAU, No. 31 FIU, No. 30 Michigan and UCF Saturday.
The `Canes will return to the court Sunday morning when they play host to No. 10 Baylor at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at 11 a.m. All matches at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter are free to the public.
