Miami's Farah Named ACC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Miami’s Romy Farah has been selected Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after finishing a combined 7-0 in singles and doubles play at the FGCU/Johan Kriek Classic in Fort Myers over the weekend.
Farah, a native of Cali, Columbia, opened her 2008 season in convincing fashion, winning all four singles matches in straight sets at the No. 2 position and all three doubles matches at the No. 1 spot alongside teammate Laura Vallverdu.
In singles play, Farah, a senior, cruised to victories over Torrie Browning of No. 32 Wichita State (6-3, 6-2), Breanna Atkinson of Stetson (6-1, 6-1), Megan Zebroski of Dartmouth (6-4, 6-3) and Julie Blackmore of No. 52 Ohio State (6-4, 6-1).
Teaming with Vallverdu at the No. 1 doubles spot, the duo won all three matches over the weekend with ease, beating FIU’s duo of Liset Brito and Priscilla Castillo, 8-5, UCF’s Elvira Serrot and Jennifer Carati, 8-2, and host FGCU’s pair of Maria Maggiorini and Maria Braniecka, 8-1, on the final day of the event.
The 11th-ranked UM women’s tennis team finished the event with a 23-4 record in singles play and an 11-1 mark in doubles action.
It marks the second consecutive season a Hurricane has earned the honor in its opening week, with Audrey Bañada being recognized on Jan. 22, 2007 after finishing a combined 6-0 at the 2007 FIU Invitiational.
The Hurricanes will play host to Florida Atlantic Friday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in the team’s first home match of the season.
