Miami Knocks Off Alabama St., 83-74

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – Dwayne Collins scored 16 points to lead Miami to an 83-74 win over Alabama State Wednesday night.
Collins was one of five Hurricanes who finished in double figures. Miami’s emphasis on low-post scoring resulted in Collins, Anthony King and Jimmy Graham combining for 42 points.
King and Graham finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Miami (6-0) has its best start since winning 14 straight to start the 2001-02 season.
After a close first half, the Hurricanes outscored the Hornets 10-3 in the early minutes of the second half.
Eddie Rios’ 3-pointer 2:39 into the second half put Miami ahead 41-33.
Although Chief Kickingstallionstims’ field goal with 15:52 remaining reduced Miami’s lead to 43-37, the Hurricanes responded with a 14-5 spurt in the next 6:01.
Collins’ basket with 4:25 left closed a 6-0 run and increased Miami’s lead to 67-49.
Miami also converted a season-high 31 free throws.
Andrew Hayles led Alabama State (2-2) with 26 points.
Brandon Brooks scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, in the final 2:41. Brooks finished with 22 points.
The Hornets ran off eight straight points for a 17-11 lead early in the first half. Jamarr Sanders’ two free throws with 12:38 remaining in the half capped the run.
But the Hurricanes countered with nine unanswered points in the next 4:10. James Dews ended the run with a 3-pointer, increasing Miami’s lead to 20-17.
