Divers Shine On Day Two of GT Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. – Reuben Ross won both the one-meter and three-meter men’s diving events while Brittany Viola came away with a win in the women’s one-meter event as the University of Miami swimming and diving team competed on the second day of the Georgia Tech Invitational at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center Saturday.

Viola clinched the win in the one-meter event with a score of 296.45, beating out LSU’s Rachel Ware (268.55) and Florida State’s Aleia Monden (265.50). Ross won the one-meter event with a mark of 425.90, edging out Florida State’s Terry Horner (410.70). In the three-meter event the two finished first and second again but Ross won by a more convincing margin of 441.30 to 367.60.

On the swimming side, the 200-yard medley relay of Britta Boesing, Magdalena Waszkiewicz, Katie Eason and Annika Saarnak finished third in the finals with a time of 1:45.21. Individually, Waszkiewicz finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke finals in 1:04.93, placing behind two swimmers from Florida State and one from LSU. Kelly Peloquin (1:06.75) and Tina Rau (1:08.33) finished 12th and 14th respectively in the 100-yard breaststroke as well.

Ryann Labreche, after qualifying for the 200-yard freestyle finals with an eighth-place finish in the prelims, placed seventh in the finals with a mark of 1:52.22.

Boesing placed eighth in the 400-yard IM prelims with a mark of 4:33.32. She also came in with UM’s top time in the 100-yard backstroke prelims, finishing with a time of 57.91, just ahead of teammate Maggie Ravenna who finished 11th in 58.16.

Eason, after recording a 15th place finish in the 100-yard butterfly prelims, finished 14th in the finals, coming in at 57.92.

J.J. Kinzbach also had a solid night on the diving boards, placing third in the one-meter event with a mark of 356.15 while he also finished 12th in the three-meter event with a score of 242.90.

Events will resume Sunday morning with the preliminary round beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the finals scheduled for 3 p.m.
