Hurricanes Win Six of Eight Matches In Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team won six of eight singles matches Friday on the first day of play of the University of North Carolina’s Kitty Harrison Invitational at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Hurricanes won all four matches against opponents from Marshall while splitting matches with the Tar Heels.
Miami opened singles play against Marshall with Laura Vallverdu, Romy Farah, Caren Seenauth and Bianca Eichkorn all cruising to wins. Vallverdu defeated Karolina Soor, 6-4, 6-1, Farah downed Isabell Raich, 6-1, 6-0, Seenauth won 6-0, 6-1 over Thaddea Lock and Eichkorn beat Jeanne Schwartz, 6-1, 6-2.
Against UNC, Farah and Eichkorn came away with wins while Vallverdu and Seenauth came out on the losing end. Farah got past Jelena Durisic, 6-4, 7-5, and Eichkorn picked up another big win with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Meg Fanjoy. In a match-up of nationally-ranked players, Vallverdu lost to Austin Smith, 1-6, 6-2, (10-6) while Seenauth also suffered a loss to Laura Reichert, 2-6, 6-2, (10-3).
Singles play will resume Sunday at 9 a.m. with UM going up against opponents from Furman.
