THE MATCHUP:

            The University of Miami travels to the University of Maryland to take on the Terps Wednesday night at the ComcastCenter.

            The Terrapins (14-2, 0-1 ACC), ranked 25th in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll are coming off of a 88-57 win over Iona on January 4th improving to 11-0 at home this season. The win was Maryland’s fifth straight.

            Maryland’s balanced offensive attack is led by senior guard D.J. Strawberry who is averaging 16.2 points per contest. Overall Maryland has four players averaging in double-figures in scoring including Mike Jones (13.6 ppg), James Gist (11.8 ppg) and Ekene Ibekwe (10.9 ppg). Ibekwe ranks second in the ACC in blocked shots (3.13 bpg).

            The Terrapins are among the league leaders in just about every statistical category including third in scoring offense (81.8), second in scoring margin (+19.3), fourth in field goal percentage (.491), second in three-point field goal percentage (.405), second in assists (17.81), fourth in scoring defense (62.5), first in field goal percentage defense (.351), second in three-point field goal percentage defense (.284) and first in blocked shots (7.94).

            Miami (8-8, 1-1 ACC) is coming off of a 59-58 home loss to WakeForest on January 6.

            The Hurricanes have been led this season by sophomore guard Jack McClinton who currently ranks fifth in the ACC in scoring (18.1 ppg), second in free throw percentage (.913) and leads the conference in both three-point field goal percentage (.484) and three-point field goals per game (3.07).

            McClinton’s roommate, Brian Asbury has stepped up his game this season and ranks second on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg). Asbury and McClinton are the lone UM players averaging in double-figures.

            With senior center Anthony King out of the line-up with a wrist injury, Asbury is the team’s leading rebounder (5.8 rpg) and also leads the team in steals (1.38 spg).

THE SERIES:

            Miami and Maryland meet the 12th time overall and for the only time this season The Hurricanes lead the all-time series 6-5 including a split of the season series last season. Both teams won on their home floors including a 65-61 Maryland win in College Park.

            The Miami-Maryland game is being produced by Raycom/Lincoln Financial Sports and will be broadcast in Miami on FSN Florida. The game will be joined in progress at 10 p.m. Tim Brant (play-by-play) and Dan Bonner (analysis) will call the game.

            The game can be heard on the Hurricane Radio Network, WQAM (560 AM). Joe Zagacki “The Voice of the Hurricanes” will call all the action with Josh Darrow adding analysis. Brian London will serve as studio host.

ON THE COACHES:

            Miami head coach Frank Haith is in his third season with the Hurricanes. His career record is 42-37 (.532).

            Maryland head coach Gary Williams is in his 18th season with the Terrapins and 29th season overall. His record at Maryland is 367-193 (.655) while his overall mark is 574-321 (.641).

VERSUS RANKED OPPONENTS:

            Miami is 25-39 (.396) versus ranked opponents since 1996-97. Miami has defeated at least one ranked team in 11 of the last 12 seasons. Miami is 34-104 (.246) all-time against ranked teams including a 30-90 (.250) record since the rebirth of the program in 1985. Miami is 5-7 against ranked teams in the BankUnitedCenter.

MCCLINTON FOR 20, AGAIN:

            Miami’s Jack McClinton has recorded seven 20-point games this season ranking in a tie for No. 1 among ACC players. Tyler Hansbrough (UNC) and Sean Singletary (Virginia) have alse recorded seven 20-point games this season.
