Deem Signs New Three-Year Contract
Oct. 27, 2006
Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – Athletic Director Paul Dee announced today that head women’s track and field coach Amy Deem has signed a new three-year contract that will keep her at the University of Miami through the 2009 season. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
“Coach Deem has taken the women’s track program from its humble beginnings and turned it into one the nation’s elite,” said Dee. “We felt the team’s high level of performance during her tenure warranted this new contract.”
Prior to Deem’s arrival in 1990 the Hurricanes had never had a woman qualify for the NCAA Championships. Entering her 17th season at Miami, Deem has guided 35 student-athletes to a combined 126 All-America honors and 10 individual National Championships. The Hurricanes have boasted at least one All-American in each of the last 14 seasons and have claimed seven of the last eight Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in two conferences.
“I appreciate the confidence that Paul Dee and the University administration have in our coaching staff and student-athletes,” said Deem. “This new contract will allow us to continue building this program into one that can compete at the highest level.”
Last season Miami swept the ACC Indoor and Outdoor titles for the second consecutive season with Deem earning ACC Coach of the Year honors following both meets.
Miami finished tied for fifth at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships marking the program’s second consecutive top-5 finish while the team placed seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships marking the highest outdoor finish in school-history.
