THIS WEEK’S GAME: First place is on the line in the ACC Coastal Division, when the MiamiHurricanes and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets meet up in Atlanta on Saturday. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. ETat Grant Field at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The game will be televised by ABC.The Hurricanes are riding a four-game winning streak and are now 5-2. They will face their toughestgame of the season. A win will put them into the driver’s seat in the division, with a stronger opportunity foran appearance in the ACC Championship Game on December 2. The Hurricanes defeated Duke 20-15 lastSaturday on the road.
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 31-7 loss at Clemson last Saturday night andare also 5-2 this season. They are ranked 21st in both the Associated Press and Coaches polls.Miami is 2-1 in the ACC, while Georgia Tech is 3-1. Georgia Tech is led by superstar receiver CalvinJohnson, who did not have a reception against Clemson for the first time in his career. However, alreadythis season, Johnson has 35 catches for 559 yards (16.0-yard average) and eight touchdowns. The YellowJackets are quarterbacked by Reggie Ball, who has completed 51.3 percent of his passes for 1,046 yardsand 11 scores. Tashard Choice leads Georgia tech with 550 yards rushing and six touchdowns.
After seven games, the Hurricanes rank eighth in the nation in total defense, 10th (tied) in scoringdefense, third in rushing defense and 55th in pass defense. Offensively, Miami ranks 74th in rushing,44th in passing, 61st in scoring and 61st in total offense. The Yellow Jackets are 69th in total offensebut 95th in pass offense, 29th in rush offense and 51st in scoring offense. Defensively, they are 37th intotal defense, 35th in scoring defense, 50th in pass defense and 32nd in run defense.
THE SERIES: The two teams have played 11 times, with Georgia Tech leading the series 7-4. GeorgiaTech is the only ACC team with a series lead over Miami.
A HURRICANES VICTORY OVER THE YELLOW JACKETS WOULD: Give them a 6-2 record and betheir fifth consecutive victory. It would give them a 3-1 record in the ACC and give them sole possessionof first place in the ACC Coastal Division. It would also give them a 5-7 record in the series againstGeorgia Tech.
