The ACC and the University of Miami announce the suspensions of Miami football players

Coral Gables, Fla. (www. hurricanesports.com) – In addition to the ACC suspensions announced yesterday, the University of Miami Athletic Department is taking the following action:

With respect to fighting, any future violation will subject student-athletes to seasonal or permanent suspensions The suspension of sophomore safety Anthony Reddick has been extended indefinitely The Athletic Department has re-emphasized to the football coaching staff the University’s commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and their responsibility to communicate this principle to the student-athletes. The coaches will be held accountable for any violation of this principle. Any further action by a student-athlete that violates these principles will not be tolerated by the University. Further, additional disciplinary measures will be taken for all involved players, including community service and other unspecified actions.

“The NCAA and the Atlantic Coast Conference have principles of sportsmanship to which the University of Miami is committed,” said UM director of athletics Paul Dee. “It is important for us to use opportunities such as these to re-emphasize this commitment to sportsmanship and to use it as an opportunity to provide a meaningful learning experience. The University of Miami does not tolerate actions inconsistent with this principle.”

Coral Gables, Fla. (www. hurricanesports.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference and the University of Miami announced today that 13 football players have been suspended as a result of the fighting incidents that occurred during the Florida International-Miami football game played on October 14. The players will be suspended for the Hurricanes’ next game versus Duke in Durham, N.C., on Saturday, October 21.

Following a thorough review of available video footage, the ACC and the University of Miami have issued one-game suspensions to Carlos Armour, Chris Barney, James Bryant, Tyrone Byrd, DajLeon Farr, Ryan Hill, Bruce Johnson, Charlie Jones, Brandon Meriweather, Brian Monroe, Derrick Morse, Randy Phillips and Anthony Reddick.

“What took place in last night’s Florida International-Miami game has no place in college football,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “The Conference and the University of Miami are taking this action because of the nature and seriousness of the situation. Officials at the University of Miami have been very cooperative in addressing this issue with the Conference Office. These suspensions send a clear and definitive message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.”

Miami director of athletics Paul Dee said, “We regret that this incident occurred. We have worked throughout the day to review the material and came to the appropriate conclusions. We thank the Commissioner and his staff for their cooperation.”
