Shumpert Named National Assistant Coach of the Year

June 13, 2006

Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami assistant women’s track and field coach Berry Shumpert has been named the USTFCCCA National Assistant Coach of the Year for women’s jumps/combined events for the second consecutive season.

Shumpert, in his second season with Miami, guided junior Tabia Charles to the national title in the triple jump, and had three women qualify for the NCAA championships in the long jump, more than any other school in the nation.

Under Shumpert’s tutelage Charles won both the ACC long jump and triple jump titles this season and was named the 2006 USTFCCCA East Region Field Athlete of the Year. Miami’s jumpers accounted for 14 of the Hurricane’s 30 points at the NCAA Championships to lead UM to a seventh-place finish, the highest in school-history.
