No. 2 Hurricanes Finish Day Two of ACC Championships in Fourth Place

Winston-Salem, N.C. (hurricane sports.com) – The No. 2 University of Miami women’s track and field team finished the second day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field meet. Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ont.) won the long jump leading a trio of scoring Hurricane jumpers and All-ACC performers.. Amy Seward (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Akera Lathan (Miami, Fla.) earned all-ACC in the heptathlon and shot put. Charlette Greggs (Miami, Fla.) broke the Kentner Stadium record in the 200-meters in qualifying first.

Charles finished in first place with a personal best mark 6.35m (20-10.00), and qualified for the NCAA regionals. Also placing for the Hurricanes were Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas) who finished fifth with a mark of 6.15m (20-02.25) and Seward who jumped 6.04m (19-09.75). Both marks were NCAA regional marks.

Seward, who earlier in the day earned the first all-ACC honor of the meet for the Hurricanes, finished in third place in the heptathlon scoring 5259 points, a NCAA provisional performance. Seward won the long jump with an NCAA regional mark of 6.05m (19-10.25), briefly vaulting her into first place, but could not hold the lead through the javelin and 800m. Seward’s mark is a personal best result.

Lathan placed second in the shot put to earn the Hurricanes third all-ACC honor. Lathan threw an NCAA regional, personal best 16.07m. Along with the winner of the event, Lathan broke the ACC Championship meet record and Kentner Stadium record.

Greggs’ mark of 23.14 in the 200-meter was a season best and an NCAA qualifying mark. Ginou Etienne (Miami, Fla.) and Krista Simkins (Wissahickon, Pa.) also qualified for the finals, in finishing one-two in the final heat of preliminaries. Etienne (24.01) qualified fifth and Simkins qualifed sixth. Greggs and Etienne also both qualified for the finals in the 400-meter. Both won their heat to qualify first (53.27) and second (53.48) respectively. Both performances are NCAA regional marks

In the preliminaries of the 100 meter hurdles, Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) won her heat in an NCAA regional qualifying time of 13.53. Her time was the fourth fastest on the afternoon. Pavi’Elle James (Miami, Fla.) finished second in her heat of the 100 hurdles, but her NCAA regional qualifying time of 13.70 was fast enough to qualify her for the finals tomorrow, with the sixth fastest time on the day. Darden also won her heat of the 400 meter hurdles in an NCAA regional time of 58.78 and qualified second for the event.

India Ransom (Largo, Md.) and Krista Simkins (Wissahickon, Pa.) both qualified for the finals in the 100 meter dash. Ransom ran a mark of 11.78 to qualify fourth and Simkins ran a 11.94 to qualify seventh.

Melanie Schultz (Davison, Mich.) won her heat of the 1500 meter automatically qualifying her for finals on Saturday afternoon. Her time of 4:33.24 was the ninth fastest on the the day. Freshman Ena Luefroy (Atlanta, Ga.) won her heat of the preliminaries of the 800 meters to automatically qualify for the finals tomorrow. Here time of 2:10.19 was the fifth fastest time of the preliminaries.

The Hurricanes finished day two in fourth place with 34 points. Florida State is in first place with 46 points.

The Hurricanes finish up competition at the ACC Championships tomorrow afternoon. Field events start at 10:00 am and the running events–all finals–start at 1:15 pm. Live results can be found on www.flashresults.com and complete results and updates will be found on hurricanesports.com.
