Greggs Leads Hurricanes At Miami Elite Invitational

Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – All-American Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) won the 400-meters and was the top collegiate finisher in 200-meters to lead the third-ranked University of Miami women’s track and field team at the Miami Elite Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla.
Greggs posted a time of 51.97 in winning the 400-meters marking the second fastest time by a collegian and the third fastest by an American this season. In addition, the time qualifies her for the NCAA East Regional Championships, May 26-27, in Greensboro, N.C.
The senior, competing in her final home meet as a Hurricane, was also the top collegiate finisher in the 200-meters posting an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 23.22 seconds. Lauryn Williams, the reigning 100-meter World Champion, won the event in a time of 23.15 second.
The Hurricanes had two other event champions including All-American Ginou Etienne (Miami Central) in the 800-meters with a mark of 2:06.14 and sophomore Khadija Talley (Benning, Ga.) in the discus with a throw of 54.32 meters (178-02). Both marks are NCAA Regional qualifiers.
Miami recorded a total of 12 NCAA Regional Qualifying marks on Saturday.
Junior Akera Lathan (Miami Southridge) posted NCAA Regional marks in two events placing third in both the shot put (15.05m/49-04.50) and discus (48.44m/158-11.00).
Senior India Ransom (Largo, Md.) ran a season-best time of 11.49 to finish fourth in the 100-meters, qualifying her for the NCAA East Regional Championships. She also ran the anchor leg of the 4×100-meter relay, along with junior Amy Seward (Virginia Beach, Va.), freshman Krista Simkins (Wissahickon, Pa.) and senior Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) that recorded an NCAA Regional mark of 44.30 seconds.
Freshman Viktoria Andonova (Coral Springs) placed third in the high jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 1.75 meters (5-08.75) while freshman Pavi’Elle James (Miami Northwestern) recorded an NCAA Regional mark in the 100-meter hurdles placing sixth in at time of 13.77 seconds.
All-Americans Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas) and Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) both recorded Regional marks in the long jump. Faluade finished second with a leap of 6.25 meters (20-06.25) while Charles placed fourth with a jump of 6.23 meters (20-05.25).
In the 1,500-meters, senior Melanie Schultz (Davison, Mich.) was the top collegiate finisher in a season-best time of 4:28.91.
