UM track Hosts Hurricane Invitational This Weekend

Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams will host the Hurricane Invitational, March 16-18, at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables, Fla.
Several of the top teams in the nation will be in attendance including the defending women’s NCAA Champion Texas Longhorns. The Texas women won last season’s NCAA Outdoor title and followed that up with a victory at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships.
The Miami women finished fifth at last weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championships garnering nine All-American honors highlighted by senior Dominique Darden’s second-place finish in the 400-meters and junior Tabia Charles’ third-place finish in the triple jump.
Miami’s senior class of Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.), Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern), India Ransom (Largo, Md.), Melanie Schultz (Davison, Mich.) and Carly Brown (Coral Gables, Fla./Ransom Everglades) enter their final outdoor season having never lost a conference meet.
The Hurricanes won their second consecutive ACC Indoor title earlier this season after winning their final two BIG EAST indoor titles prior to switching conferences. The class has also won all three outdoor conference titles (2 BIG EAST, 1 ACC) heading into this season. Overall Miami has won six consecutive outdoor conference titles.
The men’s field boasts five teams that finished in the top-25 of the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships including No. 4 Texas, No. 5 Tennessee, No. 7 Wisconsin, No. 14 Virginia Tech, and No. 25 George Mason.
Miami will be led three 2006 All-ACC selections including sophomore Tim Harris (Miami Booker T. Washington), junior Roland DaSilva (Margate, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and sophomore Lance Leggett (Bartow, Fla.).
Harris won the 2006 ACC Indoor title at 800-meters and finished 10th in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
DaSilva earned All-ACC honors with a third place in the heptathlon at the ACC Indoor Championships. DaSilva will compete in the decathlon competition beginning at 12:00 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday.
Leggett was runner up in the 60-meter hurdles at the ACC Indoor Championships.
