CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 13th ranked University of Miami women’s team will try to extend its five-match win streak when it travels to No. 28 Maryland and No. 56 Boston College for a two-match Atlantic Coast Conference road swing this weekend. The Hurricanes will first face the Terrapins Friday, March 10th at 3:00 p.m. before taking on the Eagles at 5:00 p.m. the following evening.
The Hurricanes (8-3, 1-0 ACC) return to action after posting a 2-0 record last week. Miami blanked in-state rival Florida State, 7-0, in its ACC opener at FSU before topping Pepperdine, 6-1 in Coral Gables.
Miami was ranked 13th in the latest Fila Collegiate Tennis rankings–the first computer rankings of the season. The rankings, administered by the ITA, will now be compiled by a computer formula whereas the previous rankings were done by committee vote. Miami is one of five ACC teams ranked in the Top-15. North Carolina leads the pack at No. 3 followed by No. 7 Duke. Miami is 13th followed closely by No. 14 Wake Forest and No. 15 Georgia Tech.
Miami is headlined by sophomore Audra Cohen who was ranked fourth in the latest singles rankings. After sitting out the fall season, Cohen has posted a 14-0 dual-match record at the No. 1 singles position. She is one of three ACC players ranked in Top-Five–Duke’s Daniela Bercek is No. 1 followed by Georgia Tech’s Kristi Miller at No. 2.
Cohen is joined by junior Audrey Banada, senior Melissa Applebaum and freshman Monika Dancevic in the singles rankings. Banada is ranked 86th in the country with a 16-8 overall record. Applebaum, who is 10-8 overall, is ranked No. 104. While Cohen, Banada and Applebaum have been ranked at least once in the national rankings this season, Dancevic makes her debut at No. 109. Dancevic, who has won four matches in a row, is 9-1 in her last 10 matches. She stepped up to the No. 2 position last week, winning both her matches.
In doubles, Cohen and Applebaum pair up as the nation’s 13th ranked duo. UM’s topped ranked tandem have gone 7-0 since joining at the No. 1 position. They are currently 3-0 against nationally ranked opponents.
