Houston, Texas (Hurricanesports.com) – The 30th ranked University of Miami men’s tennis defeated the No. 40 Rice University Owls Sunday afternoon, 6-1. The men won two of three matches to secure the doubles point and took five of the six singles matches. The win moves Miami to 4-1 on the season.

In doubles action, Miami jumped out to a quick advantage as the team of Josh Cohen and Eric Hechtman won 8-0 over the Owl tandem of Ben Harknett and Christoph Muller. The doubles point was won as Tim Krebs and Vivek Subramanian won 9-7 at the two spot, but they could not complete the sweet as Luigi D’Agord and Danny Vallverdu fell at the number one spot, 9-7.

87th ranked Cohen carried the momentum from his doubles victory in to a straight set victory over Harknett, 6-2, 6-2, at the number two spot.

Hechtman defeated Filip Zivojinovic, 6-3, 6-4 at the five spot and the match was clinched as John Hoyes defeated Rodrigo Gabriel, 6-0, 7-6, at number six.

No. 25 D’Agord knocked off No. 36 Robert Searle 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-4), at the one spot and Krebs downed Tony Haerle 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) at the four spot for the Hurricane’s final points.

The lone setback in singles came at number three where Vallverdu retired due to injury.

Miami returns to action Saturday February 18 against the University of Central Floria. The match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
