Starzyk Advances to Quarterfinal of ITA Southern Regional Championships

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>ATHENS, Ga. – Sophomore Patricia Starzyk claimed a Round of 16 victory to advance to the Quarterfinals of the ITA Southern Regional Championships Friday afternoon at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

Starzyk, seeded 16th, defeated Georgia State’s Annie Brieholtz in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 to advance into Saturday’s “A” singles draw quarterfinals where she will face top seeded Robin Stephenson of Alabama at 10:00 a.m.

 

Miami’s eighth seeded doubles tandem of senior Melissa Applebaum and freshman Monika Dancevic  advanced to the quarterfinals of the “A” doubles draw. The duo first downed UCF’s Fernandez/Gordon pair, 8-3, in the first round before advancing to the quarterfinals after their opponents, USF’s Vernon/Cruz, retired with the score 3-1. Saturday, the Hurricanes will face Georgia’s top seeded duo of Basu and Robinson.

 

In the “A” draw consolation, junior Audrey Banada downed Georgia Tech’s Katie Anson, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the second round where she will face Georgia’s Evgenia Subbontina.

 

Junior Ana Rupic and Dancevic also advanced to the second round of the “A” draw consolation. Rupic claimed a 6-2, 6-2 straight set victory over Georgia State’s Mateja Podogrsek and will face Georgia’s Darya Ivanov tomorrow. Dancevic topped FIU’s Daca Jovanoic, 6-4, 6-1. She will square off against USF’s Neyssa Etienne.

 

In the “B” doubles draw, Miami’s top seeded Caren Seenauth/Emily Mowery pair defeated BCC’s Powell/Gaiter duo 8-0 but fell in the second round to UAB’s Nugent/Soyalp tandem, 8-5.

 

The “A” flight singles and doubles winners along with the singles finalist will advance to the ITA/ National Indoor Championships next month on the campus of OhioState in Columbus. The elite event, slated for Nov. 3-6, is the second collegiate grand slam event of the season. Winners and finalists from the various ITA Regional Championships around the country plus at-large selections will make up the singles field of 32 and the 16-team doubles draw.

 

The ITA Southern Regionals features players from the following 21 schools: Alabama, Alabama-Birmingham, Auburn, Bethune-Cookman, Central Florida, Florida, Florida International, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Mercer, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi, Mississippi State, North Florida, South Florida, Southern Mississippi, Southeast Missouri State and Troy.
