Seventh Annual ACC-BIG Ten Challenge Pairings Announced

June 29, 2005

CORAL GABLES, Fla. –

One year after making their historical debut in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2004, the <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Miami men’s basketball team will make their inaugural debut in the tradition-rich ACC-Big Ten Challenge in 2005, taking on Michigan Nov. 29 in Ann Arbor, Mich. as announced today by the ACC and ESPN.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

“We are excited to be a part of the traditional ACC-Big Ten Challenge,” said head coach Frank Haith. “Michigan is an outstanding team that is well coached and returns a lot of veteran players. Playing on the road against the Wolverines will be a big challenge for us.”

The new, expanded ACC-Big Ten Challenge college basketball event – increasing to 11 games from nine in the six previous years — will include two telecasts on ESPNU, the new 24-hour college sports network. ESPN and ESPN2 will combine to televise the other nine games, marking the fourth consecutive year every game will be televised nationally.

The seventh annual event between the two conferences playing for the Commissioner’s Cup will feature 11 games from 11 different college campuses the first Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 28-30).

Since 2000, these two conferences have combined to make 13 Final Four appearances and captured four of the last six NCAA Championships. In addition, the ACC and Big Ten rank either first or second in all-time NCAA Tournament bids, victories and Final Four appearances.
