June 8, 2005
Sacramento, Calif. (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami assistant track and field coach Berry Shumpert has been named the United States Track Coaches Association National Assistant Coach of the Year for jumps and multi-events.
Shumpert, in his first season with the Hurricanes, has four long jumpers, one triple jumper and a heptathlete participating this week at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Miami’s four qualifiers in the long jump are the most of any school in the nation.
This season Shumpert guided senior Amber Williams (Succasunna, N.J.) to a sweep of the ACC indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon titles. Williams became the first multi-sport athlete to win both the ACC indoor and outdoor titles in the same season.
Williams placed fifth in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships becoming the first Hurricane woman to earn All-America honors in a multi-event competition.
Shumpert also guided sophomore Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) to All-America honors in both the long jump and triple jump, and sophomore Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas) to All-America honors in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
