Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The third-ranked University of Miami women’s track and field team will have 12 student-athletes competing in 10 events at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 8-11, in Sacramento, Calif.

Miami’s deep and talented group is highlighted by senior Kim Barrett (Miami Gulliver Prep) who enters the NCAA Championships having won nine consecutive shot put events including last weekend’s NCAA East Regional title.

Earlier this season, Barrett became the fourth Hurricane to win an NCAA individual national title when she won the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

Also competing in the shot put will be senior Adrienne Moss (Miami Southridge) who is an at-large selection after placing sixth at the East Regional.

Leading Miami’s sprinters will be junior Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) who won the 200-meter title at the NCAA East Regional and enters the NCAA Championships with the second-fastest time in the nation. Greggs, the ACC Outdoor Champion at 200-meters and 400-meters, is also in the relay pool for both the 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter relays.

Miami will have two women competing in the 400-meters. Sophomore All-American Ginou Etienne (Miami Central) enters the regional with the seventh best time in the nation this season, while senior All-American Wiande Moore (Spring, Texas) has the nation’s 12th fastest time.

In addition, junior All-American India Ransom (Largo, Md.) received an at-large berth in the 100-meters. Ransom, who placed eighth in the event at the NCAA East Regional, is also a member of UM’s fourth-ranked 4×100-meter relay.

Junior Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.), a seven-time All-American and 2005 ACC Champion, is one of the favorites in the 400-meter hurdles having posted the third fastest time in the nation in winning the NCAA East Regional title. Darden is also in the relay pool for both the 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter relays.

Miami corps of jumpers is arguably the best in the nation. Four Hurricanes have qualified in the long jump, more than any other school in the nation, including sophomore All-American Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas), senior All-American Amber Williams (Succasunna, N.J.), sophomore Amy Seward (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore All-American Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario).

Charles, a five-time All-American, also qualified in the triple jump following a second-place finish at the East Regional. Charles has the sixth-best triple jump mark in the nation this season.

Williams, the 2005 ACC Champion, will also be competing in the heptathlon at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season. During the indoor season she placed fifth in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships becoming the first Hurricane woman to earn All-America honors in a multi-event competition.

Freshman All-American Lauren Austin (Oviedo, Fla.) qualified for the NCAA Championships as a member of the Hurricanes 4×400-meter relay.
