Women's Track Impressive Heading Into NCAA Championships

Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The sixth-ranked University of Miami women’s track and field team broke three school-records, recorded two NCAA automatic qualifying marks and nine NCAA provisional qualifying marks this weekend in its final competitions prior to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 11-12, in Fayetteville, Ark.

The Hurricanes, competing at both the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. and the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet in Blacksburg, Va., recorded several impressive performances on Saturday.

Leading Miami at the Alex Wilson Invitational was senior Kim Barrett (Miami Gulliver Prep) who won both the shot put and weight throw. Barrett recorded her fourth win of the season in the shot put with a toss of 16.78 meters (55-00.75) and posted her second win of the season in the weight throw with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 20.97 meters (68-09.75).

In the 400-meters, sophomore All-American Ginou Etienne (Miami Central) won the in a school-record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 52.67 seconds. Her time is the sixth fastest in the nation this season.

Also establishing a new school-record was junior Melanie Schultz (Davison, Mich.) who finished sixth in the mile run with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 4:46.81. This marks the third time this season that Schultz has bettered the school-record in the mile.

Junior All-American Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks in both the 200-meters and 60-meter hurdles. Darden recorded personal bests in both events finishing second in the 200-meters (23.64) and second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.26).

Miami corps of jumpers dominated the Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet taking the top three spots in the long jump and two of the top four positions in the triple jump.

Sophomore All-American Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) led a Hurricane sweep of the long jump recording a school-record and NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 6.49 meters (21-03.50).

Sophomores Amy Seward (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas) both recorded NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the triple jump placing second (6.24 meters/20-05.75) and third (6.21 meters/20-04.50) respectively.

Charles and Faluade also recorded provisional qualifying marks in the triple jump. Charles placed second with leap of 13.03 meters (42-09.00) while Faluade finished fourth with a jump of 12.67 meters (41-07.00).
