Tabia Charles Claims Long Jump Title as UM Wraps Day Two of the ACC Indoor Championships in First Place

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore All-American Tabia Charles recorded a jump of 6.24 meters to win the ACC’s long jump title as the third-ranked University of Miami women’s track team concluded the second day of competition at the 2005 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. in first place with a total of 48 points.
Charles’ mark was her second-best of the season and her third NCAA provisional qualifying jump of the season.
Teammates Brenda Faluade, Amber Williams and Amy Seward finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the long jump with marks of 6.11, 6.10 and 6.08 meters, respectively.
UM’s Wiande Moore and India Ranson each won their respective heats with the second (7.50 seconds) and third (7.55 seconds) fastest times of the day, respectively, in the prelims of the 60-meter dash. Both automatically qualified for tomorrow’s finals.
In the 200-meter dash prelims, Hurricane All-Americans Dominique Darden and Moore each finished with a time of 24.53 to advance to Saturday’s finals.
Darden also qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.37.
All-American teammates Ginou Etienne and Charlette Greggs earned an automatic birth into Saturday’s finals of the 400-meter dash as Etienne crossed the line 53.95 seconds and Greggs in 54.64 seconds. UM’s Lauren Austin also advanced to the finals with a time of 55.65 to win her respective heat.
In the one-mile, Melaine Schultz finished with a time of 4:53.13 to move into Saturday’s finals.
The Hurricanes currently sit at first place with an overall score of 48 points followed by North Carolina t 30.5 points, fellow ACC newcomers Virginia Tech with 26 points and fourth-place Wake Forest with 22 points.
The third and final day of competition of the 2005 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships conclude Saturday at the Eddie Smith Field House.
