Williams, Darden Advance at 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Miami’s Lauryn Williams (Rochester, Pa.) advanced to the semifinals of the 100-meters while fellow Hurricane Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) qualified for the semi-finals of the 400-meter hurdles Friday evening at the opening day of the 2004 U.S. Track and Field Olympic Team Trials in Sacramento, Calif.
Williams, who has the second fastest time in the world and the fastest time by an American this season (10.97) in the 100-meters, ran the fastest time in the preliminaries Friday with a wind-aided 11.13 to automatically qualify for the semi-finals.
Darden clocked in with a time of 58.05 in the quarterfinals of the 400-meter hurdles to finish fourth in her respective heat and 16th overall to move on to the semifinals.
Former Hurricane All-American Wyllesheia Myrick also advanced to the semi-finals of the 100-meters Friday with a time of 11.42.
Day two of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials will begin Saturday at approximately 10 a.m. (PST). The semi-finals of the 100-meters are slated for 3:30 p.m. (PST) while the 400-meter hurdle semi-finals are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (PST).
Saturday’s action will be televised nationally on NBC beginning at 8 p.m. (EST).
