UM Runners Head To Olympic Trials

July 6, 2004

Sacramento, Calif. (hurricanesports.com) – Three current Hurricane runners and two former UM track and field stars will be competing at the United States Track and Field Olympic Trials, July 9-18, in Sacramento, Calif.

Leading the University of Miami contingent is junior Lauryn Williams (Rochester, Pa.). Williams, the 2004 NCAA National Champion at 100-meters, has the second fastest time in the world and the fastest time by an American this season (10.97).

Williams, who will be competing in her first Olympic Trials, is no stranger to international competition having won three gold and two silver medals while representing the United States in international competition, including the 100-meter gold at last summer’s Pan American Games.

Sophomores Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) and Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) will also be competing in their first Olympic trials. Greggs, a four-time All-American, will participate in the 400-meters while Darden, a five-time All-American, qualified in the 400-meter hurdles.

Two former Hurricane greats will also be at the trials. Yolanda McCray, the 1999 NCAA National Champion in the 100-meter hurdles, will be in action this weekend as well as Wyllesheia Myrick, a two-time All-American, who will compete in both the 100-meters and 200-meters.

The Olympic Trials will feature 14 hours of live coverage on NBC and the USA network, during all eight days of competition. Coverage begins Friday at 11 p.m. Eastern Time on USA. Highlights of the first weekend of competition include the men’s and women’s 100 meters, men’s shot put pole vault and 10,000 meters, and women’s high jump, 800m and 5,000m.
