Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The 10th-ranked University of Miami women’s track and field team will have eleven members competing in eight different events for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 9-12, in Austin, Texas.
Miami, which finished third at last weekend’s NCAA East Region Championships in Gainesville, have qualifiers in the 100-meters, 400-meters, 400-hurdles, long jump, triple jump, 4×100-meter relay, 4×400-meter relay and heptathlon.
The Hurricanes are led by seven-time All-American Lauryn Williams (Rochester, Pa.) who will compete in the 100-meters and 4×100-meter relay. Williams has the fastest time in the world this season in the 100-meters and is the top-seed heading into the NCAA Championships. She captured the East Regional 100-meter title and ran the second leg of the Regional Champion 4×100-meter relay.
Miami’s 4×100-meter relay of junior Chinela Davis (Haverstraw, N.Y.), Williams, sophomore Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) and freshman India Ransom (Largo, Md.) are seeded fifth heading into the NCAA Championships.
Darden has also qualified in the 400-meter hurdles, an event she had not competed in until this season. Darden finished second in the event at the NCAA East Regional Championships and is the school-record holder. She enters the NCAA Championships ranked sixth in the nation.
Sophomore All-American Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) and freshman Ginou Etienne (Miami Central) both qualified in the 400-meters, and will be joined by junior Wiande Moore (Spring, Texas) and senior All-American Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern) on the 4×400-meter relay.
Carter is also one of three Hurricanes who have qualified in the triple jump along with freshmen Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) and Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas). Charles and Faluade both earned All-America honors during the indoor season and will also compete in the long jump.
For the first time in school history the Hurricanes will have a woman competing at the NCAA Championships in the heptathlon. Junior Amber Williams (Succasunna, N.J.) is the UM record holder and enters the NCAA Championships seeded 22nd.
