Deem Named District Coach of the Year

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami head women’s track and field coach Amy Deem has been named the 2004 Mondo South District Coach of the Year by the United States Track Coaches Association.
This marks the third time in the last four seasons Deem has been honored by the USTCA having also won the award in 2001 and 2002.
This season Deem guided the Hurricanes to their second consecutive BIG EAST Indoor track and field title and their sixth BIG EAST Outdoor Championship in the last seven seasons. Miami’s BIG EAST Outdoor Championship in 2004 was its fourth consecutive marking the first time in BIG EAST history a women’s team has collected four consecutive outdoor titles.
Deem and her staff was honored as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year at both the indoor and outdoor championships. Deem and her staff has been honored as the BIG EAST Outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year seven times in the last nine seasons.
UM finished 10th at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships marking the best finish in school-history and has been ranked as high as sixth in the nation by Trackwire this outdoor season.
Now in her 14th season at Miami, Deem’s student-athletes have garnered 68 All-America honors and six individual NCAA titles. She has had at least one woman earn All-America honors in each of the last 13 seasons. Prior to taking over the Hurricane program in 1990 Miami had yet to have a student-athlete qualify for the NCAA Championships.
This season Deem guided Lauryn Williams (60-meters, 200-meters), Tabia Charles (long jump, triple jump) and Brenda Faluade (long jump) to All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Miami also captured six BIG EAST individual and relay titles at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships and seven individual and relay titles at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships giving UM a total of 79 BIG EAST titles during Deem’s tenure.
This season has also seen junior Lauryn Williams develop into one of the world’s top sprinters. Williams currently has the fastest time in the world this season in the 100-meters (11.01) and the third fastest time in the world in the 200-meters (22.46).
The UM women’s track and field team will be competing at the NCAA East Regional Championship, May 28-29, in Gainesville, Fla. prior to heading to Austin, Texas for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 9-12.
