Women's Track Wins Fourth Straight BIG EAST Title

Piscataway, N.J. (hurricanesports.com) – Junior All-American Lauryn Williams (Rochester, Pa.) won the 100-meters and 200-meters to lead the sixth-ranked University of Miami women’s track and field team to its fourth consecutive BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Piscataway, N.J.

Williams won the 100-meters in a time of 11.50 seconds and 200-meters in a time of 23.47 seconds. She also ran the second leg of the BIG EAST Champion 4×100-meter relay. Her 100-meter victory was her third consecutive making her the first women’s runner in BIG EAST history to win three straight 100-meter titles. Following the meet Williams was honored as the Most Outstanding Track Performer.

Miami finished with 160 points, 53 ahead of Pittsburgh which placed second. With the victory the Hurricanes become the first school in BIG EAST history to win four consecutive outdoor championships. Head coach Amy Deem and her staff was honored as the Coaching Staff of the Year for the seventh time including each of the last four seasons.

Sophomore All-American Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) captured the BIG EAST 400-meter hurdle title with a time of 57.84 seconds, while freshman All-American Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) won the triple jump with a BIG EAST Championship record leap of 13.42 meters (44-00.50).

Miami’s 4×100-meter relay of junior Chinela Davis (Haverstraw, N.Y.), Lauryn Williams, Darden and sophomore India Ransom (Largo, Md.) won the BIG EAST Championship for the second straight season.

The 4×400-meter relay of junior Wiande Moore (Spring, Texas), freshman Ginou Etienne (Miami Central), junior Amber Williams (Succasunna, N.J.) and senior All-American Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern) won for the third consecutive season.

In the hammer throw, senior Megan Cobb (Ypsilanti, Mich.) finished fifth with a school-record toss of 55.02 meters (180-06.00). With the throw Cobb qualifies for the NCAA Regional Track and Field Championships, May 28-29, in Gainesville, Fla.
