March 25, 2004
Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami women’s track and field team travels to Gainesville, Florida to participate in the 61st Annual Coca-Cola Florida Relays, March 26-27, at the University of Florida’s Percy Beard Track.
Miami, which recorded a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, is coming off a strong showing last weekend’s Hurricane Invitational. Miami won three events and qualified 13 student athletes for the BIG EAST Championships.
The Hurricanes are led by seven-time All-American Lauryn Williams (Rochester, Pa.) who this past summer won Gold Medals in the 100-meters and 4×100-meter relay at Pan Am Games, as well as a Silver Medal in the 4×100-meter relay at the World Championships.
Williams anchored the 4×100-meter relay of junior Chinela Davis (Haverstraw, N.Y.), junior Wianda Moore (Spring, Texas) and sophomore All-American Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.) to an easy victory at the Hurricane Invitational. The winning time of 44.17 seconds established a new meet and stadium record, and qualified the relay for the NCAA Regional Championships, May 28-29, in Gainesville, Fla.
The Florida Relays will be the first collegiate outdoor competition for freshman Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) who at the NCAA Indoor Championships became the first Hurricane to earn All-America honors in both the long jump and triple jump.
