Williams, Charles and Faluade Earn All-America honors

Fayetteville, Ark. (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami junior Lauryn Williams (Rochester, Pa.) earned All-America honors in the 200-meters, and freshmen Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) and Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas) both earned All-America honors in the long jump to highlight the first day of action at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
Miami recorded 10 points on the opening day and is in eighth-place heading into Saturday’s final day of competition. UCLA and Florida lead the competition with 29 points.
Williams finished fourth in a school-record time of 22.79 second becoming the first Hurricane to earn All-America honors in the 200-meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The All-America honor is the sixth of Williams’ career.
In addition to her 200-meter performance, Williams won her preliminary heat of the 60-meters in a time of 7.27 seconds to advance to the final third consecutive season. Williams’ time was third fastest of the preliminary round.
Charles, who will also compete in the triple jump on Saturday, finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.23 meters (20-05.25) while Faluade took ninth with a leap of 6.04 meters (19-09.75). Charles’ fourth-place finish marks the highest by Hurricane in the long jump at the NCAA Championships.
The Hurricanes have several scoring opportunities on Saturday including Williams in the 60-meters, Charles in the triple jump, and 4×400-meter relay.
Williams and Charles are seeded third in their respective events while the 4×400-meter relay of freshman Ginou Etienne (Miami Central), sophomore Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.), senior Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern) and junior Wiande Moore (Spring, Texas) is seeded eighth.
