UM Women Claim Second Straight BIG EAST Indoor Championship

Syracuse, N.Y. (hurricanesports.com) – Freshman Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) won the long jump and the triple jump, and junior All-American Lauryn Williams (Rochester, Pa.) captured the 60-meters and the 200-meters to lead the 12th-ranked University of Miami Hurricanes to its second consecutive BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championship in Syracuse, N.Y.
Following the meet Charles was honored as the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Field Athlete.
The Hurricanes won seven events including the 60-meters, 60-meter hurdles, 200-meters, 400-meters, 500-meters, long jump and triple jump in dominating the field. Miami finished with 170 points easily defeating second-place finisher Notre Dame (111 points).
Charles, who won the long jump on Saturday with a personal best leap of 6.28 meters (20-07.25), captured the triple jump with a mark of 13.08 meters (42-11.00). Overall Miami took the top-4 places in the triple jump including senior All-America Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern) who was second with a mark of 13.02 meters (42-08.75), freshman Brenda Faluade (Katy, Texas) who placed third (12.59 meters/41-03.75), and freshman Amy Seward (Virginia Beach, Va.) who finished fourth (12.16 meters/39-10.75).
Williams, a five-time All-American, captured her third consecutive BIG EAST 60-meter title with a meet record time of 7.27 seconds, and won her second BIG EAST Indoor 200-meter championship in the last three seasons with a time of 23.61 seconds.
Sophomore All-American Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, Pa.), who finished second to Williams in the 200-meters, won the 60-meter hurdles in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.39 seconds.
In the 400-meters sophomore All-American Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) won with an NCAA provisional mark of 54.60 seconds, while freshman Ginou Etienne (Miami Central) captured the 500-meter championship with a school-record time of 1:11.48.
Senior Melanie Schultz (Davison, Mich.) broke her own school-record in the mile run with a time of 5:01.86, finishing sixth.
In addition, Miami finished second and third in the shot put. Senior Jennifer Penrose (Mesa, Ariz.) finished second with a toss of 15.53 meters (50-11.50) while fellow senior Adrienne Moss (Miami Southridge) took third with a throw of 15.49 meters (50-10.00). Both Penrose and Moss provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 12-13, in Fayetteville, Ark.
