Hurricanes Head To BIG EAST Championships

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (hurricanesports.com) – The 12th-ranked University of Miami women’s track and field team will begin defense of its 2003 title at the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, February 21-22, in Syracuse, N.Y.
Miami will be led by junior All-American Lauryn Williams who ranks No. 1 in the nation in the 60-meters (7.21) and No. 1 in the BIG EAST in the 200-meters (23.24). Williams is the two-time defending BIG EAST Champion at 60-meters.
Sophomore All-American Charlette Greggs will look to defend her 2003 BIG EAST indoor title in the 200-meters. She ranks second the conference in the event (23.56) behind Williams. In addition, Greggs is the BIG EAST’s top seed in the 400-meters (53.49).
The Hurricanes’ 4×400-meter relay of freshman Ginou Etienne, Greggs, sophomore All-American Dominique Darden, and senior All-American Kitoya Carter also ranks No. 1 in the BIG EAST.
Miami expects to score well in the jumps led by freshman Tabia Charles. Charles has the nation’s top mark in the triple jump (13.53m) and will be seeded third at the BIG EAST Championships in the long jump (6.10m).
The BIG EAST’s top seed in the long jump is Miami freshman Brenda Faluade with a mark of 6.25 meters (20-06.00). Overall the Hurricanes have six of the top nine BIG EAST marks in the long jump, and five of the top seven marks in the triple jump.
In the throws the Hurricanes will be led by senior Adrienne Moss who ranks second in the BIG EAST in the shot put (15.62m) and fifth in the conference in the weight throw (17.13m).
