CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) – Freshman reserve guard Guillermo Diaz scored a game-high 23 points, helping Miami open its season with an 86-66 win over Lubbock Christian on Friday.

Diaz made 9-of-12 shots from the floor for Miami, which also got 20 points and a career-high 12 rebounds from senior forward Darius Rice.

Lubbock Christian, an NAIA school, cut a 19-point halftime deficit to 55-43 with 16:06 left, but Diaz scored seven points in a 16-6 run that allowed the Hurricanes to pull away.

William Frisby and Robert Hite each scored 10 points for Miami, which won its 11th consecutive season-opener. The Hurricanes shot 55.2 percent from the field and outrebounded Lubbock Christian 47-25.

Mo Turner and Jared Fears each scored 19 points for Lubbock Christian (2-2), while Brandon Jones added 16.
