UM Hosts Team Georgia In Final Exhibition Game

Nov. 10, 2003

Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami men’s basketball team will conclude its 2003-04 exhibition season against Team Georgia on Wednesday, November 12, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

ADMISSION IS FREE.

Miami’s match-up with Team Georgia will be the final tune-up for the Hurricanes prior to the start of the regular-season. UM opens the 2003-04 campaign on November 21 against Lubbock Christian beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Convocation Center as part of the Las Vegas Tournament.

Miami will be led this season by 6-10 senior forward Darius Rice. Rice, a 2003-04 preseason All-BIG EAST first-team selection, has been named a preseason candidate for both the John Wooden National Player of the Year Award and Naismith National Player of the Year Award. Rice has led the Hurricanes in scoring each of his first three seasons and last season averaged 18.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Last season Rice ranked among the BIG EAST Conference leaders in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goals made.

In addition to Rice, the Hurricanes will look to several sophomores who gained valuable experience last season as freshmen. Six-two guard Robert Hite (18 starts), 5-11 guard Armondo Surratt (15 starts), 6-4 guard Eric Wilkins (nine starts) and 6-9 forward Gary Hamilton (eight starts) combined for 50 starts last season marking the most starts by a group of Hurricane freshmen since 1985-86.

Miami will also rely on one of the top recruiting classes in the nation. The Hurricanes’ incoming class of freshman forward Karron Clarke, freshman guard Guillermo Diaz, sophomore forward/center Leonard Harden III, freshman guard Anthony Harris and freshman forward/center Anthony King has been ranked as high as eighth in the nation by Street & Smith’s.

Season tickets for the 2003-04 men’s basketball season start at just $175. For more information, or to purchase season tickets, contact the Hurricane Ticket Office at (305) 284-CANE in Dade, or 1-800-GO-CANES.
