Women's Track Ranked 19th In The Nation

Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami women’s track and field team is ranked 19th in the nation in the latest Trackwire Top-25 poll released Tuesday.

Miami is fresh off its dominating performance at the 2003 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend in Storrs, Conn. The Hurricanes won eight individual and relay titles en route to 166 points, the highest point total at a BIG EAST Championship in 19 years.

Leading the way for the Hurricanes was freshman All-American Charlette Greggs (Miami Northwestern) who recorded victories in the 200-meters (23.18) and 400-meters (52.17), and ran the second leg of the BIG EAST Champion 4×100-meter relay.

Sophomore All-American Lauryn Williams (Rochester, PA), the World Junior Champion at 100-meters, defended her BIG EAST 100-meter Championship in a time of 11.62 seconds. Williams also took second in the 200-meters in a time of 23.30 seconds and was also a member of the BIG EAST Champion 4×100-meter relay.

Also defending her BIG EAST Championship was senior All-American Sharianne Lawson (Palm Beach Lakes) in the 100-meter hurdles. Lawson, ranked 10th in the NCAA in the event, posted a Stadium record time of 13.40 seconds.

Senior All-American Patricia Pearson won her first BIG EAST Outdoor 800-meter title in a time of 2:06.94. In the shot put, junior Adrienne Moss (Miami Southridge) became the second Hurricane in the last three seasons to win the outdoor title with a toss of 15.36 meters (50-04.75).

The Hurricanes closed the meet in grand fashion winning the 4×400-meter relay for the second consecutive season with a BIG EAST Championship record time of 3:33.38. The team of senior All-American Jamillah Wade (Philadelphia, PA), freshman All-American Dominique Darden (Harrisburg, PA), sophomore Wiande Moore (Spring, TX) and junior All-American Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern) broke the old BIG EAST mark set last season by the Hurricanes.

Miami, which has now won five of the last six BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, has already qualified 17 student-athletes in 12 events for the NCAA Regional Championships, May 30-31, in Fairfax, VA. Miami has qualified two sprinters in the 100-meters, three sprinters in the 200-meters, five sprinters in the 400-meters, two runners in the 800-meters, four hurdlers in the 100-meter hurdles, one in the 400-meter hurdles, the 4×100-meter relay, the 4×400-meter relay, three jumpers in the long jump, one in the triple jump one thrower in the discus and two throwers in the shot put.
