Moss Wins Big East Shot Put Title

STORRS, Conn. – University of Miami junior AdrienneMoss (Miami Southridge) won the women’s BIG EAST shot put championship,sophomore All-American Lauryn Williams (Rochester, PA) qualified for thefinals of both 100-meters and 200-meters, and freshman All-American CharletteGreggs (Miami Northwestern) qualified for the finals of the 200-meters and400-meters to highlight Saturday’s action at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track andField Championship in Storrs, CT.
Moss, who’s winning toss of 15.36 meters (50-04.75) is an NCAA Regionalqualifier, is the second Hurricane in the last three seasons to win the BIGEAST shot put title. UM junior Jennifer Penrose (Mesa, AZ), who finishedsecond to Moss with a throw of 15.28 meters (50-01.75), won the title as afreshman in 2001. Penrose also recorded an NCAA Regional qualifying mark.
Miami, which is looking to win its third consecutive BIG EAST Outdoortitle and the fifth in the last six seasons, is looking very strong headinginto the final day of competition. The Hurricanes recorded 42 points on theopening day and are in second-place, four points behinds Notre Dame, whichleads the Championship with 46 points.
Williams, the 2002 World Junior Champion and defending BIG EAST Championin the 100-meters, breezed into Sunday’s 100-meter final posting a time of11.49 to win her preliminary heat. Her time was the fastest of the qualifyinground.
Williams also won her preliminary heat of the 200-meters with a time of23.64 to earn a spot in Sunday’s final. Greggs, the BIG EAST Indoor championat 200-meters, posted the fastest time of the preliminaries winning her heatwith a mark of 23.19.
Also qualifying for the 200-meter finals was senior All-American SashanieSimpson (Miami, FL) with a time of 24.02 seconds.
Greggs, who ranks third in the NCAA in the 400-meters, also recorded thefastest time of the 400-meter preliminaries winning her qualifying heat in atime of 53.38 seconds.
Miami had four runners qualify for the 400-meter final including Simpsonwith a time of 53.71, junior All-American Kitoya Carter (Miami Northwestern),the BIG EAST Indoor Champion, with a time of 54.40 and senior All-AmericanSaraque Whittaker (Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas) with a time of 54.33seconds.
UM scored big in the long jump placing four jumpers in the top-seven.Senior All-American Gina Harris (Philadelphia, PA) took second with an NCAAregional qualifying mark of 6.44 meters (21-01.50). Sophomore Chinela Davis(Havertown, NY) placed fourth with a personal best leap of 6.27 meters(20-07.00) while sophomore Amber Williams (Succasunna, NJ) finished sixthwith a jump of 6.10 meters (20-00.25). Senior All-American Sharianne Lawson(Palm Beach Lakes) was seventh with a mark of 6.08 meters (19-11.50).
Lawson, the defending BIG EAST Champion in the 100-meter hurdles, won herqualifying heat in a time of 13.36 seconds to advance to Sunday’s final.Lawson’s time was the fastest of the preliminaries. Amber Williams alsoqualified for the hurdle final with a time of 13.90 seconds.
In addition to their one-two finish in the shot put, Moss and Penrosealso scored in the discus. Penrose placed fifth with an NCAA Regionalqualifying mark of 46.11 meters (151-03) while Moss finished seventh with atoss of 45.11 meters (148-00).
Miami also saw two women qualify for the 800-meter final as seniorAll-American Patricia Pearson (Jacksonville, FL) won her heat in a time of2:08.26, the fastest of the preliminaries. Senior Terria Madison (Columbus,GA) also advanced with a time of 2:12.15.
Senior All-American Jamillah Wade (Philadelphia, PA), the two-timedefending BIG EAST Champion in the 400-meter hurdles, won her qualifying heatwith a stadium-record and NCAA regional qualifying mark of 58.43 seconds.Wade is attempting to become just the second hurdler in BIG EAST history towin the 400-meter hurdles in three consecutive seasons joining former UMgreat Patrina Allen who won the event in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
