April 30, 2003

Coral Gables, FL (hurricanesports.com) – Head women’s track and field coach Amy Deem announces the signing of Tabia Charles (Pickering, Ontario) to a national letter of intent to attend the University of Miami this fall. Charles selected Miami over LSU, Nebraska and Illinois.

“Tabia (Charles) is a tremendous addition to our program,” said Deem. “She has continually proven herself against the best competition in the United States and Canada, and we expect her to continue Miami’s tradition of outstanding jumpers.”

Charles, who is completing her senior year at Pine Ridge Secondary, is a three-time National Scholastic Indoor Champion in the triple jump (2001, 2002, 2003) and the Canadian Junior Record holder in the triple jump both indoors (13.13 meters/43-01.00) and outdoors (12.95 meters/42-06.00).

Charles recorded Canada’s top mark in the triple jump (13.13 meters) during the 2003 indoor season and is the defending Canadian Junior Champion in the triple jump. She also finished second in the long jump at the 2002 Canadian Junior Championships.

Charles is the second recruit of the spring signing period to sign with the Hurricanes joining jumper Brenda Faluade (Katy, TX/ Mayde Creek High School). Miami has signed four recruits overall including jumper Amy Seward (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem High School) and sprinter Ginou Etienne (Miami Central) who signed with Miami during the early signing period in November.
